DAFED
Dragon Guarded • Population 125,000
A gleaming marble city battered by endless storms, Dafed survives beneath the protection of monsters older than kingdoms themselves.
City of Giants

Dafed reveres greatness. In a city built upon ambition, scale itself became a form of worship.

Before the closing of Keridwyn’s gates, Dafed stood among the kingdom’s grandest architectural marvels. Vast white towers pierced the clouds while colossal statues, marble archways, and enormous fountains transformed even ordinary streets into monuments of pride. The city’s masons became legendary throughout the kingdom, their work exported across nations as symbols of wealth and prestige.

Yet Dafed was never built in a forgiving place. Its exposed coastline leaves it vulnerable to relentless storms that roll in from the sea year-round. With no mountains, cliffs, or natural harbors to shield it, the city survived only because its builders learned to create structures capable of enduring punishment that would destroy lesser settlements.

This struggle shaped the identity of Dafed. Demand for resilient construction elevated skilled masons into positions of immense importance, and competition among architects became fierce. Entire districts were rebuilt repeatedly as craftsmen sought to outdo one another with ever greater feats of engineering.

The city’s true wealth lay beneath the earth. Rich veins of lead, iron, and workable stone made the region invaluable, but none of its resources carried greater prestige than the brilliant white marble for which Dafed became famous. During the reign of Keridwyn, caravans and merchant fleets carried its stone across the kingdom to adorn castles, temples, and noble estates.

When the alliance began to fracture, Dafed initially supported Enviro. The city’s economy depended heavily upon trade with Crossroads, and its people possessed little appetite for warfare. Neutrality seemed the safest path.

That illusion shattered when Enviro turned its attention elsewhere. Bayag saw opportunity in Dafed’s weakness and advanced upon the region with its massive industrial war machines. Mercenaries from Rispast soon followed, hired to secure Bayag’s expanding claims.

Bayag openly mined resources within Dafed’s territory, arguing that the old borders of Keridwyn granted them lawful access to the land. Dafed attempted to resist, but its armies were repeatedly forced back behind their gleaming white walls.

The final assault nearly ended the city.

Then the earth began to shake.

At first the people feared another advance from Bayag’s engines. Instead, the ground itself erupted as the Ancient Dragon Trydish rose from centuries of slumber beneath the region. Furious at having his rest disturbed, the dragon descended upon Bayag’s forces with catastrophic violence and drove them from the territory.

The destruction gave way to confusion when the dragon noticed something unexpected: the people upon the walls were cheering for him.

Amused by the vast marble city that had appeared during what he considered a brief nap, Trydish declared Dafed part of his domain. Remarkably, the city accepted this arrangement with surprising enthusiasm.

Trydish was not the only ancient creature to take interest in Dafed.

Years later, local fishermen unknowingly harvested the brood of a Leviathan named Goln. Enraged, the sea serpent retaliated by destroying ships across the coast and assaulting the harbor itself. With Trydish refusing to wake from one of his many slumbers, panic spread throughout the city.

The conflict ended only because a quick-thinking mage attempted something no one expected: communication.

After learning the cause of Goln’s fury, the city negotiated a pact. Dafed would protect her brood and grant the harbor as a nesting ground. In return, Goln would defend the city from threats emerging from the sea.

Today Dafed exists beneath the shadow of two ancient titans — guarded by a Dragon on land and a Leviathan beneath the waves.

Though mercantile guilds from Crossroads maintain chapter houses throughout the city, they possess far less influence here than elsewhere. Faith dominates public life in Dafed. Religious institutions command enormous political power, with the Church of Trydish and the Church of Drathnaz standing as the city’s most influential factions.

Most species can be found within Dafed’s marble districts, particularly Humans, Gnomes, and other more natural races. Dragons, however, rarely remain long within the city — insisting, often unconvincingly, that their absence has nothing to do with Trydish.

Strangest of all is the near-total absence of Goblins. Few citizens openly discuss the matter, and fewer still seem interested in explaining it.

TRYDISH
Hedonist
Ancient Acid Dragon

Trydish predates the founding of Keridwyn itself. He was born during an age when Dragons ruled openly and the younger species survived only in isolated corners of the world.

During the height of draconic civilization, Trydish eventually grew bored and entered one of his many legendary slumbers beneath the earth. By the time he awoke, entire kingdoms had risen and fallen above him.

His awakening during Bayag’s invasion left him deeply confused. Noisy machines had interrupted his sleep, and somehow an enormous white city now stood atop what he considered his territory. More surprising still was the sight of countless tiny creatures celebrating his appearance instead of fleeing from it.

Amused rather than angered, Trydish chose to spare the city and instead claimed it as his own. The people of Dafed quickly embraced the arrangement, elevating him into a living symbol of divine protection.

Despite his terrifying power, Trydish is remarkably lazy. He spends much of his existence sleeping, wandering the skies aimlessly, or indulging in the admiration of his followers. The citizens of Dafed often compare him to an oversized cat: affectionate when pleased, destructive when irritated, and impossible to predict.

His personality strikes many scholars as strangely childlike for such an ancient being. He delights in praise, grows bored easily, and rarely concerns himself with politics or governance. While he tolerates the worship of other gods and creatures, most believe this stems less from wisdom and more from simple disinterest.

He also holds little hostility toward Goln. In fact, Trydish appreciates having another powerful creature guarding the city, as it reduces the amount of effort he must personally exert.

“If they insist on building monuments to me, it would be rude not to allow it.”
GOLN
Leviathan
Ancient Sea Serpent

Goln is an immense Leviathan whose jaws are large enough to consume entire ships. Unlike the mindless sea monsters described in sailors’ tales, Goln is highly intelligent, patient, and deeply calculating.

For centuries she nested in hidden waters far from civilization, protecting her brood from hunters and rival predators alike. That secrecy ended when a resourceful Demon monster-hunter discovered one of her breeding grounds, forcing Goln to relocate her eggs closer to the surface.

The new nesting grounds brought disaster. Young Leviathans wandered into fishing routes near Dafed where local crews unknowingly harvested them. Goln retaliated swiftly, sinking vessels and following the attacks back toward the harbor city itself.

Panic spread as the massive serpent assaulted the bay, smashing ships and coastal structures with ease. The situation might have become catastrophic had an angelic mage not intervened with a powerful calming spell and an attempt at communication.

Goln found the mage unexpectedly fascinating. Few land dwellers possessed either the courage or intelligence to speak rather than attack. After lengthy negotiations, a pact was formed between Leviathan and city.

Dafed would protect her brood and recognize the harbor as protected territory. In return, Goln would defend the city from naval threats and creatures rising from the depths.

Though she openly considers Trydish an overgrown fool, Goln quietly respects his willingness to cooperate with other powerful beings — a trait she believes most Dragons lack entirely. She would never admit this to him directly.

Over time, the people of Dafed discovered that Goln’s intelligence made her surprisingly valuable in matters beyond warfare. Citizens now bring disputes, mysteries, and unusual problems before the Leviathan, whose ancient perspective often produces unsettlingly effective solutions.

“Land dwellers panic too quickly. Most problems become manageable once you stop screaming.”
